Indonesia Coastal Empowerment & Resilience Support or Indonesia Coastal Empowerment & Resilience Support (INCOASTERS) working in partnership with Wanadri Foundation delivering a mangrove adoption campaign programme as part of the support for the initiative Coastal Guardian. This programme aims to strengthen mangrove ecosystem rehabilitation efforts in Mayangan Village, Legonkulon Subang Regency, West Java Province.
This region is facing serious impacts from climate change. The erosion that has occurred has wiped out approximately 250 hectares of land, including mangrove forest areas, which have now turned into open water. If this condition continues, Mayangan Village faces the potential threat of sinking in the coming decades. Through the Coastal Guardian (Wali Pesisir) programme, it is hoped that sustainable efforts will be established to protect and restore the mangrove ecosystem as a natural coastal defence.
In its implementation, mangrove planting is carried out using an innovative method in the form of cylindrical concrete culvert with a diameter of 60 cm and a height of 100 cm. The applied testing method developed by the Wanadri Foundation is designed to protect mangrove seedlings from the impact of large waves, thereby increasing the survival rate.
In addition, every mangrove sapling planted has 2-year maintenance warranty. Dead or failing seedlings will be replaced, thereby ensuring the sustainability and tangible impact of this programme.
